Monadnock Humane Society

monadnock humane societyThe mission of Monadnock Humane Society (MHS) is to improve the quality of life for animals and people through humane education and to provide shelter and adoption services for lost, abused or abandoned animals.

MHS rescues and provides medical care, treatment, food, shelter and tender loving care to lost or unwanted pets until they are reunited with their family or are placed in a forever home.  We do not turn away any animal needing care. Every animal is provided with the very best medical and behavioral intervention possible and given the best chance to find a new home. Each year, MHS takes in more than 2,000 animals.

We believe that education is key to creating a humane community - one in which all living beings are valued and treated with respect. Inspiring and enabling youth to be compassionate towards and responsible for animals through a variety of avenues - including outreach to schools, community partnerships, and internships - is our primary goal. Young learners that are engaged in interactive learning experiences with animals build a more humane community for all.

It's not just a shelter - MHS has a Training Center that provides reward-based and humane solutions to teach dogs to be polite and well-mannered, and the certified professional trainers work with the owners to help nurture their relationship with their dogs. The Boarding and Daycare Center offers a clean, state-of-the-art facility that gives peace of mind to owners who need a safe place for their pet.

MHS was founded in 1875. It began as a group of committed citizens who cared enough about people and animals to open their homes and provide temporary shelter, food and love to destitute children, women, families and animals who were in need of help. During the early part of the 20th century, states and local governments began providing services to people, and the focus of MHS shifted towards the animals which were not protected by the government.  The present facility opened in July 2000 and has grown to become one of the largest animal shelters in the state.
